Safety Manager

The Gilman Brothers Company is seeking a full-time Safety Manager in Gilman, CT 06336.

About the Role:

The Safety Leader is responsible for directing and leading the development of companywide risk control business plans and strategies consistent with company objectives.  Strategies will focus on reducing the frequency and severity of associate injuries and illnesses, compliance with governmental regulatory agencies, including OSHA & EPA, and the protection of the Company’s assets.  This role is also responsible for the process of identifying, measuring, and managing related hazard risks, developing reports and plans, analyzing safety problems, and defining and/or overseeing the implementation of the risk solutions that help to optimize operations.    

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead and serve as the primary safety expert for the Company
  • Establish and build safety metrics, provide leadership around accurate reporting and metrics, support Company safety initiatives, and justify the allocation of appropriate resources to areas where the safety risk is highest
  • Ensure all incident reporting is timely and investigation processes identify root causes and prevent reoccurrence
  • Develop and provide safety training for all employees
  • Build a strong organizational safety culture and apply behavioral risk concepts to risk control programs and practices
  • Serve as the Safety Committee Leader
  • Oversee and manage the company PSM program
  • Perform job hazard analysis to identify organizational risks.  Develop and implement programs to mitigate these risks and achieve desired results
  • Direct Safety Audit Program
  • Manage Safety Action Plan
  • Research, understand, interpret, and apply applicable laws to manage and ensure 
  • compliance to all OSHA, DEEP, and EPA programs
  • Analyze and propose updates as needed for company policy, procedures, and practices to ensure compliance with OSHA and other regulatory safety and environmental health requirements
  • Create and maintain effective and actionable loss prevention metrics
  • Coordinate with the maintenance team to oversee facility permits and inspections
  • Complete and maintain compliance calendar for all required activities and reporting obligations
  • Develop an annual training plan that outlines who will be trained, the training topics, and the estimated date(s) that training will be conducted. As a minimum, training programs must meet all applicable legal requirements
  • Ensures managers and supervisors have the appropriate safety and health; accident prevention; and investigation training
  • Oversee the applications for and receipt of necessary permits along with the necessary reporting to all agencies for compliance methods
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in safety/environmental/ergonomics or related field preferred
  • Five or more years of professional experience establishing, leading, and improving safety and/or environmental programs
  • Industry knowledge including OSHA, EPA, NFPA, PSM
  • Certified Safety Professional or EHS designation preferred
  • Excellent communication skills with every level of the organization
  • Must be able to communicate in the English language, verbally and in writing
  • Spanish is a plus
  • Have advanced computer literacy 
  • Proficient in MS Office applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Familiar with operating systems, such as Windows, etc.
