Controls Engineer

Wellhead Electric Company Inc is currently seeking a Controls Engineer to join their team in Sacramento, California 95811

Who we are:

A privately owned company located in Sacramento that develops, designs, builds, owns, and operates power generation facilities.  

Since 1982 we have developed and operated more than 400MW of power generation facilities in California and afield. 

We are experts in natural gas generation, solar and storage. In 2016 we designed and brought to market our award-winning Hybrid EGT solution. 

About the role:

The Controls Engineer is a key member of the Operations and the Engineering team at Wellhead Electric Inc. 
This position reports directly to the Director of Operations and is responsible for assisting Plant Operations and the Senior Controls Manager with all aspects of plant control systems located at multiple power generation facilities. 

This position works with internal resources, contractors, and vendors to ensure robust control systems are in place to preserve reliability, identify areas for improvement and for the development and installation of new systems.

This position normally works a standard dayshift but will require some 24/7 response availability in emergency situations. A hybrid work arrangement is available. This position requires some travel.


What you'll do:
  • PLC, SCADA and HMI programming, design development and maintenance 
  • Troubleshooting control systems (software, hardware, electrical, and/or mechanical problems)
  • Commission control systems including device configuration, I/O checkout, PID tuning, debugging
  • Develop and maintain control system network configurations, network security, and communication protocols
  • Prepares specifications for instruments, computers, networking equipment, PLCs, and associated components
  • Implementation and maintenance of plant data historians
  • Provide technical support, testing, and inspection expertise within their assigned process areas to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation.
  • Provide engineering, design, economic justification, and specify parts and materials for projects and modifications. Implement projects and process modifications
  • Develop, review & revise station procedures & technical instructions, and documentation of equipment testing and inspections
  • Monitor hours spent on projects and direct efforts to maintain design budgets
  • Prepare periodic project status reports
  • Able to multitask on multiple projects and project elements 
  • Seek and study problems, conflicts, incomplete or ambiguous design information and any other questions/issues presented by subs, vendors, or engineers.
  • Update estimates, schedules, reports, and documents based on revisions and changes to the project
  • Assist with preparation of final project reports including obtaining historical data and information
  • Conduct quality checks of all documents and reports, verifying accuracy of data, information, and calculations
  • Draft detailed drawings or sketches
  • Develop quantity estimates by obtaining and analyzing data on unit labor costs and unit material costs
  • Other duties as assigned
Our ideal candidate:
Education and experience
  • An accredited engineering degree and/or relative training is a plus.
  • Human Machine Interface systems (HMI) 
  • Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA – Aveva Citect) systems
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC – Allen Bradley, GE, Modicon)
  • Gas Turbine Control products experience a plus (GE, Woodward Micronet) 
  • MATLAB
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • AutoCAD, PLSCAD, PDMS 3D design platform, ETAP experience a plus
Skills and abilities:
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, and percentages. 
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra. 
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. 
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical form.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage small work groups.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple assignments and prioritize is required.
  • Must have strong knowledge of internet and uses.
  • Must have strong communications skills
  • Possess strong analytical skills.
Physical Demands:
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to lift to 25 pounds.
  • The vision requirements include close vision.
